Risk Control Consultant

PURPOSE:

To assist the Florida School Boards Insurance Trust and its’ members in saving lives, limbs, property and claims in order to improve our members’ well-being, image, resources and finances thereby assuring the heath of the Trust. 

  1. To provide safety, health and risk management consultation, evaluation, training, guidance to the Trust as a whole and individual Trust members.
  2. To identify the exposures of the Trust and the level of controls of those exposures.
  3. To assist the Trust and the individual Trust members in eliminating, reducing or controlling losses.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Data analysis.  Prepare and provide communication such as letters, reports, presentations, memos and phone calls on data analyzed that identifies injury, property damage and or claim trends to assist the Trust and member Districts.
  2. Identification of exposures and level of controls.   Prepare and provide communication such as letters, reports, presentations, memos and phone calls on the members’ current physical condition, documentation, history, future condition and plans that may have an effect on the members’ current and future loss potential to assist the Trust and member Districts.
  3. Reduce, control or eliminate losses.  Provide technical support to assist members in complying with safety, health, employment practice regulations and standard practices and make recommendations that will reduce losses and solve member problems associated with losses.  Using consultation type skills, sharing knowledge and experience, impressing the advantages to affect positive change in reducing, controlling or eliminating losses.
  4. Member services.  Provide required, needed or perceived services to our members.  Safety Specialists should have knowledge of all the members and understand the services the member requires, needs or perceives and provide same or using consultation skills in educating the member on the best way to fulfill the members’ desires.
  5. Training and education services.  Provide or obtain services such as classes, seminars, workshops, presentations or lectors in order to assist members in reducing, controlling or eliminating losses or providing service to the member.
  6. Member contact.  Conduct a minimum of one contact per month with each member.
  7. Continuity of service.  Maintain close communication with Claims staff and attend quarterly claims review of member.
  8. Expense management.  Monitor expenses to optimize Trust mission.  Controls include but are not limited to: expense reporting, following expense policies, suggesting changes to policies, vehicle control, travel control and monitoring internal and external educational needs.
  9. Internal Communication.  Timely prepare and provide, as requested or required, effective communication such as letters, reports, presentations, memos, forms, logs and phone calls.
  10. Follow all Florida School Boards Association and Trust policies, procedures and guidelines

 MINOR FUNCTIONS

  1. Marketing.  Assist staff with sales and marketing of Trust services and products.
  2. Mentor.  Assist with the training and education of new employees.
  3. Other duties as assigned 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  1. Full time position.  Normal working days are Monday thru Friday, normal working hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm.
  2. Consultants can and will work outside these days and hours and can be placed in an “on call” status during emergency events either with our members or with the Trust.
  3. Daily travel possible.  Overnight travel can be up to 50%.  Travel outside of the state of Florida is less than 5%.
  4. Environmental exposures include but not limited to: heat, cold, high humidity, rain, sun, darkness, loud noises, falls, struck by and against, long time frames (up to 8 hours) of driving or passenger in an automobile/sitting at a desk/standing/walking/talking, being exposed to heights, small places, wet places, dirty areas, areas of poor ventilation, areas where personal protective equipment is required, and areas where your person can be searched.

 BONA FIDE OCCUPATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (BFOQ)

  1. Valid Florida Drivers’ License.
  2. Graduate from an accredited college or university with a degree in safety and health, risk management, business, insurance, or related field, or professional experience equivalent to such a degree.
  3. Five years of field safety, health, risk management or other required experience or equivalent educational experience.
  4. Completion of Sanitation and Casualty Safety Inspector training as prescribed and administered by the Florida Schools Plant Management Association or within 2 years of hire.
  5. Completion of the National Parks and Recreation Association’s Certified Playground Safety Inspector training or within 1 year of hire.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1.     Florida State Fire Marshal standards and requirements
2.     Florida State Requirements of Educational Facilities (SREF)
3.     National Fire Protection Association Guidelines
4.     OSHA regulations under 29CFR1910 and 29CFS1926 as a guide
5.     Americans with Disabilities Act
6.     Florida State Health Department rules
7.     Florida Worker’s Compensation laws
8.     Trust documents and policies
9.     Computer knowledge to include: Microsoft Office and other computer systems, programs and equipment used by the Trust.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Speak, read, write and comprehend English.
  • Push, pull up to 100lbs.  Lift and carry 30lbs.
  • Climb stairs, ladders or other means to access all areas of a members’ property.
  • Be able to wear personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses, safety footwear, gloves and raingear.

STATUS:

Exempt.  Reports to the Director of Insurance Operations followed by the Executive Director of FSBIT.
